2014 was supposed to be Spain's year, but anything can happen in a single-elimination World Cup. Five years later, Spain is your anything-can-happen champ. Finale from Beijing: https://www.nba.com/article/2019/09/15/world-cup-finale-spain-outlasts-field …

Ricky Rubio: "I lost my mom three years ago. She was behind me and pushing me every day to get the best out of me. I know there's nobody in this world who loved me more than her. She's still driving me every day. Even if she's not here, I feel it." #FIBAWC

Hard not to be happy for this dude...

More Rubio on his mom: "She's still driving me every day. Even if she's not here, I feel it. I'm really proud to have the mom that I had and keep going through her." [2/2]

This is very good John. The lack of points off turnovers were really a killer. I don't think people often gasp how much forcing TOs and running was essential foe most US team during Coach K years.

The loss of Tatum after Game 2 also hurt the transition game. In what we saw from him, he was arguably their best player on the break.

But Fournier might be calling for a @tomhaberstroh investigation into the sched. "In 2 weeks, we went to 4 different cities. It's unacceptable. Yeah, we had 1 day off in between games, but every time, we had 6-8 hours of bus, train, plane... It's not acceptable for a player."

"But friends of mine like Tobias (Harris) ... it was a great opportunity for him to just see something different and compete. I don't think they really realize how beneficial this is for their career."

Fournier very clear about the benefits of playing FIBA & though he admitted he's "exhausted," said, like Marc Gasol a couple of days ago, it's worth it. "Our career is only, like, 10-12 years. So you want to give everything you have for 10-12 years. It's not a problem."

Fournier on Poirier: "It's clear that he's a center that can block shots and control the paint. He's a terrific roller, can really catch a lob, and obviously has a lot of energy. It's a good pick-up for Boston, for sure."

Batum on Poirier: "This guy, I think, just started basketball 5 years ago, so he's had a special career. His energy was great. We can't count on Rudy every game... He was huge. He wasn't scared by Bogut & Baynes... He was amazing tonight."

Really good minutes from Celtics rookie Vincent Poirier as France came back from 15 points down to beat Australia for the #fibawc bronze medal.

The lack of top-flight talent is the easy answer for what went wrong for the USA at the World Cup. There’s more to it than that. A post-mortem from Beijing:

Writing about Spain in the WC final & wondering why we had to create an English version of España. I know we don't have the ñ, but we could just spell it a little differently (Espanya) & pronounce it the same as they do. "Espanya" is so much nicer than "Spain."

(Of course, maybe Wednesday's win over USA wasn't that big of an upset.)

2nd straight World Cup in which France pulled off a big upset in the quarterfinals (they beat Spain in Madrid in '14), only to lose in the semis.
